I am a Nurse Practitioner certified in pediatric primary care by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Currently, I am an anesthesia NP at LeBonheur Children's Hospital. I assist with pre-anesthesia assessments of patients undergoing surgical and diagnostic procedures and provide patient and caregiver anesthesia education. By evaluating the patients before they are seen by an anesthesia team member, I help create an efficient patient flow. Decreasing OR delays and day-of cancellations benefits the surgical and anesthesia teams, represents a cost savings to the hospital, and improves patient experience and satisfaction. I perform a physical exam of the patient and evaluate histories, labs and medications and distill these data in the EMR to provide a complete clinical picture for the anesthesiologist.I assess children across the spectrum of medical complexity and partner with surgical specialties to ensure medical optimization. Before the procedure, I meet and observe the patient and obtain patient and family history from the caregiver and I obtain and review medical records and history from both internal and external sources. Additional labs, medications for pre-operative sedation, diagnostic tests, and referrals are arranged as indicated. I collaborate regularly with the anesthesiologist as needed or as indicated by patient status.My experience in a hospital setting has increased my familiarity with many rare syndromes and increased my proficiency in assessment of the well child. My prior experience as a public health nurse and my four years in primary care prepared me to serve as part of a hospital-based team of medical professionals providing care to both well and sick children of all ages.
