Speech-Language Pathology

Graduate assistant in the department of Communication Disorders. Responsibilities included organizing department events such as fundraisers, assisting professors with research, and performing secretarial duties in the clinic office including assisting the office manager with administrative tasks, answering the office phone, organizing and cleaning various clinic spaces, and interacting with patients and families upon arrival to the clinic.

I am currently completing a clinical practicum at St. Mary's Medical Center through LinguaCare. Throughout the summer semester, I have had the opportunity to provide speech, language, and dysphagia therapy to patients of various ages who demonstrate a wide variety of disorders. Additionally, I have had the experience to observe and assist with Modified Barium Swallow Studies and conduct bedside swallowing, speech, and language evaluations. I have also gained a lot of experience collaborating with other medical professionals such as nurses and physicians.

I am currently completing a clinical practicum at River Park Hospital. River Park Hospital is an inpatient psychiatric hospital located in Huntington, WV. During my time at River Park, I have had the opportunity to provide speech, language, and swallowing intervention to patients of various ages who exhibit various psychiatric disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and dementia). I have also had the opportunity to conduct voice therapy and complete dysphagia screenings for all newly admitted patients over the age of 65. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to lead group therapy sessions focused on pragmatic (social) skills, problem-solving skills, and memory.

Throughout graduate school, I have had the opportunity to provide speech and language therapy to children ages 2-5 who exhibit mild-severe articulation/speech/language disorders. Additionally, I have gained experience in conducting standardized speech and language assessments as well as hearing screenings. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to participate in the multidisciplinary autism diagnostic clinic and lead a social skills group for middle school and high school students.

During the spring 2018 semester, I completed a clinical practicum at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Pediatric Rehabilitation in Ashland, KY. I worked with clients ages 2-12 who exhibited mild-severe speech and language disorders. During this clinical practicum, I also had the opportunity to collaborate with other professionals (occupational therapy) and build close relationships with parents and caregivers to ensure carryover of skills and success outside of the therapy room.

I had the opportunity to complete a clinical practicum at Vern Riffe School, which is a school for children with disabilities. During that time, I had the privilege of working with children of various ages who demonstrated a variety of disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, TBI, and other developmental delays. Additionally, I had the opportunity to co-treat with an occupational therapy assistant and physical therapy assistant. My time at Vern Riffe School allowed me to learn how to appropriately serve a more severe population and grow as a clinician.

In addition to Vern Riffe School, I had the opportunity to provide speech therapy to students in kindergarten-5th grade one day per week at Northwest Elementary School. I worked with students in both the general education and special education classrooms. Additionally, I worked with high school students in the high school special education classroom. During my time at Northwest, I conducted articulation therapy, language therapy (including AAC), and also worked with a student with a severe hearing impairment.
