Just joined this fantastic service for an initial six months, supporting children and young people who have been affected by sexual abuse, as well as their families, schools and carers. In the end I remained for a year and a half. It was a privilege to be part of this highly-skilled and talented team.
I worked at Off Centre as Senior Art Therapist, heading up a small but dynamic creative therapies department. In the time I was there, art therapy became and integral part of the clinical service. The main focus of my role was clinical work, conducting assessments and seeing individual clients for weekly art therapy. The complex nature of the clinical work meant that I was required to do a lot of liaison with other professionals, attend external meetings and so on. In addition I line managed and supervised staff and students on placement. I was also instrumental in getting innovative projects off the ground e.g. working in parallel with a photo journalist and an art therapist/animator with young people who attended the service. As one of the management team, I was involved in more strategic thinking, and decision making on policies and procedures as well as managing the uncertainties caused by a difficult funding climate.

Set up and ran a weekly open art therapy group for day service users. This involved informal assessment and one to one discussions about what the group would entail. Feedback was positive, and funding for the pilot group extended for a further six months. Sadly funding problems meant that after a year the group had to end.

This charity (now no longer in existence) was dedicated to the provision of art therapy for children who had suffered trauma and loss. Included outreach work in local schools, working with parents and children on attachment and running a group for pre-school children.
I worked for just under a year in (London) Derry in Northern Ireland. My client group were young children of primary school age, many.
Placements with Maggie's Centre in Edinburgh, and the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow informed my research into the effectiveness of art.
