July - November 2015 (Student)In in final practicum I was an outreach worker, working with young people in the care of the Department of Child Safety. I worked alongside young people to help meet their needs, encouraging client empowerment; the work involved was driven by a strengths base approach and a task-centred and solution focused practice. I co-facilitated a reputational enhancement model activitie program where young people in the care of the Department of Child Safety were able to access and participate in group work and adapt team work skills skills and knowledge, as well build life skills via activities such as cooking, fishing and camping. I also co-facilitated a 'drum beat' program with young Mum's from the Young Parenting Program for 10 weeks.December 2015 - May 2016 (Residential Youth Worker)On the completion of my practicum, I worked as a residential youth worker across various houses across the organisation. Some key roles included:-Providing supervisory care, including physical, emotional, social and spiritual for young people within the bounds of the Child Protection Act 1999 and the Statement of Standards.-Assisting in the practical day-to-day functioning within the residential house.-Acting as an appropriate adult role model, communicating effectively with the young people using appropriate behaviour management techniques.-Participating in admissions, reviews and discharge conferences as appropriate.-Promoting positive relationships.-Reporting incidents or events relating to young people in care to appropriate line management using relevant written or verbal communication.-Maintaining integrity in such matters as confidentiality and promoting client interests.-Working rostered 24-hour shift work including sleepovers and on-call duties.-Participating in ongoing professional development as directed, including all mandatory training requirements.
