While completing her undergraduate degree, Amanda's interest in Special Education Law developed when she served as a 1:1 aid for children living with special needs and realized the need for educational reform and civil rights advocacy. While at WLS, Amanda was a Fellow in the prestigious Center for Children's Rights Fellowship Program, provided advocacy services for low income families in WLS's pro-bono Special Education Legal Clinic, and served as an Editor of the Journal of Child and Family Advocacy. Since founding Selogie and Brett, LLP and the Inclusive Education Project, Amanda immersed herself in the world of civil rights and educational advocacy by becoming a supervising attorney for UCI Law School's Education Rights Pro-bono project, and has been appointed to the Orange County Child Care and Development Planning Council where she serves on the Inclusion Collaborative Committee. Amanda's career did not begin as a focus just on the practice of law - but as a tool to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves, to fight for all children to have a voice. She believes that children should be recognized and supported by the abilities and the facets of their being that makes them who they are and makes them special, rather than their disabilities. She focuses her practice, and her work on each individual child on the child first, who they are and that each one deserves the opportunity for an equal education. She takes that passion with her to each IEP meeting she attends, each case she fights for and for every family that walks through her office doors. Through Selogie and Brett and the Inclusive Education Project she has had the opportunity to be a mentor to some up and coming law students from UCI, USC and Whittier Law School, to inspire them to dive deep into the world of public interest law and look at the practice of law in a different light - from an adversarial fight, to an opportunity to give children a better future.
