Education MentorWestern Iowa Tech Community College Jan 2022 - Jan 2023Sioux City RegionThe Iowa Department of Education pushed a Digital Initiative to move Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) programs to an online platform, Instructure Canvas. Due to my proficiency with Canvas and with online teaching, I was hired as a mentor-trainer to help the Adult Basic Education (ABE) instructors transition to online teaching, using courses in Canvas that had been developed by Atomic Jolt. In this role, I remotely assisted Atomic Jolt at a conference session to facilitate a certification course. I worked closely with the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) instructors at WITCC to modify the Canvas courses, to better suit the needs of our program and students. I became very familiar with the math courses in particular. I worked with these instructors in person and remotely. -
Adjunct ProfessorWestern Iowa Tech Community College Aug 2017 - Dec 2022Sioux City RegionI have been teaching Introductory Biology (for non-majors) at a community college since 2017. The course has a strong focus on chemistry and cell biology since it has been the pre-requisite for A&P courses for health science students. Even with that focus, I still get to teach about ecology, evolution, genetics, and diversity of life. Our Learning Management System (LMS) at WIT is Instructure Canvas, and I used it since I started at WIT. I have attended many professional development trainings to hone my skills in Canvas and have become proficient in using it to teach. In 2020, I created the master course in Canvas for Introductory Biology. The master course has since been used by several instructors to teach online, hybrid, and face-to-face. During development of the course, I made extensive use of the digital resources that our textbook provides, through Cengage Unlimited. I became proficient at using and editing the textbook’s MindTap, which is Cengage’s digital platform. I have attended many Canvas and Cengage trainings and I have mentored other instructors in the use of Canvas and Cengage in their courses.During my time teaching this biology course, I have created a multitude of original resources, for students and for other instructors to use in teaching face-to-face and online. I created worksheets and instructional materials in Microsoft Word, as well as several activities where the students use Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint templates. I have shared these worksheets and activities with other instructors teaching the course. I also created and edited instructional videos in Screencast-o-matic and in Canvas Studio. Since the pandemic, I have mastered using Zoom in classes. I also taught myself how to make interactive activities in PowerPoint so that remote classes are more engaging. I continue to use interactive slides in PowerPoint as I teach face-to-face and over Zoom. -
