General Duties: Work with the extension plant pathologist to execute the overall extension and research program in cooperation with other Division of Agriculture personnel and industry cooperators, have an active role in the experimental design, data collection, and statistical analysis of any and all research done and will supervise all hourly employees in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field as tasks assigned to complete experiments. Responsible to assist the extension plant pathologist with creating and giving educational presentations on the local, state, and national level to more efficiently disseminate research findings and further their own professional development.Laboratory: Media prep, ordering lab supplies, maintaining cultures, inoculum preparation for field trials and preparation of common reagents for basic science protocols. Conduct applied experiments related to fungicide resistance screening and pathogenicity bioassays. Identify pathogens using molecular and morphological methods. Accurately record data from experiments in an efficient and timely manner and assist with data entry.Greenhouse: Maintain culture and plants for experiments with soilborne and foliar diseases. Propagate materials as needed and preparing soil and growing media for greenhouse trials. Maintain greenhouse pot experiments.Field: Supervise test plot maintenance and application of pesticides and inoculum, collection of samples, disease evaluation and data collection. Responsible for collecting aerial imagery using unmanned aerial vehicles and processing data for further use.

Responsibilities: Assisted in implementation of rice breeding and genetics studies in field and greenhouse environments using variations of pedigree and bulk selection schemes. Included: Preparation of land for planting field studies; maintenance of field plots through cultural management and application of agricultural chemicals; utilizing and maintaining farm implements including tractors, combine harvesters, cultivators, spray rigs, fertilizer spreaders, and other implements; collecting field data in flooded rice fields including agronomic traits, yield, and pest reactions; crossing plants including pollination and emasculation; anther culture; hand harvesting grain and processing for various laboratory assays; processing seed for planting in summer and winter nursery trials; developing field plot plans; organizing and maintaining inventories of seed harvested and agricultural chemicals; maintaining research data records using spreadsheets and summarizing using statistical software.
