Responsible for coordination of grant-funded restoration activities in the Indian Creek watershed; assisting the southwest Virginia Freshwater Mussel Recovery Coordinator with identification and collection of broodstock animals; larval extraction and inoculation of host fishes; host fish collection and maintenance; retrieval, maintenance and transfer of juvenile mussels; maintaining facility logbooks; assisting with mussel survey and monitoring projects; experimental data analysis; updating of website; assume southwest Virginia Freshwater Mussel Recovery Coordinator responsibilities in his/her absence including scheduling of day-to-day operations, scheduling all mussel production and release events in compliance with Virginia’s Freshwater Mussel Restoration Strategy, permit reporting and renewal, ensuring contractual work goals are met, presenting culture information at professional meetings, chairing the Mussel Recovery Group, and supervision of three part-time wildlife technicians and one full-time biologist’s assistant. Served as acting southwest Virginia Freshwater Mussel Recovery Coordinator from September 2010 to January 2012.

Responsible for coordinating conservation related outreach to all residents, business owners and landowners in Powell River watershed to increase public awareness and understanding of available natural resources, threatened and endangered species, pollution sources and prevention methods, and encourage protection, enhancement and enjoyment of the Powell River, being knowledgeable of ongoing restoration actions in the local area to inform citizens of their reasons, goals, and scope, maintain certification to conduct Virginia Save Our Streams monitoring (benthic macroinvertebrates), providing outreach at local fairs, festivals, and other public events, coordinating educational events for the public including informational meetings and workshops, providing local educators with information/techniques to be utilized in the classroom and coordinating youth educational events (Kids in the Creek Day, Ag Field Days, Envirothon competition, etc.) designed to incorporate Virginia Standards of Learning.
