Funded by a Tufts Springboard grant, BRIC is a joint initiative of the Henry J. Leir Institute and Tisch College at Tufts University and ACEDONE (African Community Economic Development of New England), a local organization assisting African refugees and immigrants resettling in the Boston area. Our overarching goal is to promote women’s economic empowerment in the East African community in greater Boston through participatory action research methods.

As a part of my project placement through the Tisch Scholars program, I will be developing a volunteer-based tutoring program at this facility. I will operate as a student coordinator and recruit a cohort of student volunteers whilst starting the program at Tufts. Additionally, I will:- Assist the Regional Field Manager in strategizing program implemention- Organize and run debrief sessions- Provide awareness training for volunteers- Serve as a weekly tutor- Engage in advocacy efforts for prison education and prison reform- Operate as founding member of Tufts University's chapter of The Petey Greene Program

The Tufts University Prison Initiative at the Tisch College of Civic Life (TUPIT) brings Tufts students and faculty together with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, correctional staff, activists, educators, and scholars of criminal justice reform to facilitate creative and collaborative responses to the problems of mass incarceration. My duties as the inaugural student collaborator include:- Conducting qualitative and quantitative research analysis on our formative research "College-In-Prison Impact on Formerly Incarcerated Men"- Archiving pertinent news articles, essays, and studies about mass incarceration- Organizing and coordinating both on campus and off campus events - Serve as a student supervisor to an advisory board composed of Tufts students who tutor in prisons

Through the Tisch Summer Fellowship program under the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life, I will spend the summer in D.C. supporting LIFT, a non-profit that works to fight poverty by directly engaging with community members to help them build the necessary personal, financial, and social foundations to combat poverty. In particular, I will:- Work on an ongoing basis with clients to assess needs, make progress towards goals, and build new skills or locate new resources- Conduct meetings in Spanish with non-English speakers- Help a client to practice their employment interview skills, find a local G.E.D. program, identify affordable housing or child care, or provide listening and support- Work on community partnership development to help LIFT-DC identify high quality community resources and increase awareness of LIFT-DC’s services in the area- Be responsible for identifying gaps in LIFT-DC’s knowledge of community resources, conducting outreach and meetings with community organizations, and setting up strong referral relationships to improve clients’ ability to access services-Update LIFT-DC’s resource database with relevant information
