About Amanda French

My wide-ranging career has one overarching theme: helping academia adjust to the digital age. I’m driven by the conviction that websites and applications don’t have to be inhuman for the people who use them or the people who build them. I believe in open scholarship, open data, data standards, and sustainable digital archives.I’ve just begun a new position at Crossref as the Technical Community Manager for ROR, the Research Organization Registry. Last year, I helped UCSF archivists write and win a $250,000 grant from the Sloan Foundation for The COVID Tracking Project Archive and helped write and edit content for the website of the NEH-funded project The American Solider in WWII. Before that, I was one of the key leaders of The COVID Tracking Project at The Atlantic, helping run a tremendously influential citizen science crisis response organization that compiled and published COVID-19 data from 56 US states and territories.Other highlights of my career so far include running THATCamp at GMU’s Center for History and New Media, directing Digital Research Services at Virginia Tech Libraries, and holding the CLIR postdoctoral fellowship at NCSU Libraries. I’ve led and advised some remarkably successful digital projects; I’ve developed and nurtured large online communities; I’ve taught humanities and STEM scholars to use digital tools and understand digital issues; I’ve advocated for user-centered design; I’ve written and have helped others write clear, concise, and well-organized web content; and I’ve facilitated many innovative, productive, collegial, and fun events. I often speak and sometimes write about topics such as openness in scholarly publishing, Agile, and digital humanities.

Listed skills include Research, Higher Education, Teaching, Library, and 33 others.
