As a manager for a local start-up, I grew my skills and responsibilities alongside the company. As a non-profit volunteer, I led teams of 10-20 people on 3 month trips to Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, border Somali, and Haiti. Each trip was focused on providing assistance to areas of disaster, famine relief, and rebuilding in the aftermath of guerrilla warfare. Logistically, this included:• Generating the team's travel itinerary, tracking expenses, managing the budget.• Briefing and de-briefing team members to make sure that they had the tools to cope for what each country presented.• Ensuring the physical safety for each member of the team.• Networking with local volunteers to identify the most acute need for that location.• Organizing the volunteer projects each team would work on. My approach was always practical--we spent the majority of our time clearing rubble, rebuilding key structures, teaching classes on general and sexual health, volunteering at orphanages, and participating in talk therapy with Ugandan ex-child soldiers.After the 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti in 2010, I lived and worked as a disaster relief volunteer in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.While there I:• Helped coordinate the distribution of food, tarps, and clean water to Cité Soleil (Haiti's largest tent city at the time).• Organized community gatherings and childcare to provide a safe place in the tent city for the most vulnerable of the population.• Coordinate the travel and volunteer efforts of 15+ volunteer groups from the United States.
