During this time I developed an protein purification system for the F1 sector of Escherichia coli and a process to use a fluorescent label on that sector. Additionally, I performed extensive mutations on the coding sequence of the b subunit of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae F1FO ATP synthase, expressed the recombinant protein within the complex, and assayed the enzyme for activity using biochemical assays.• Supervised four undergraduate students on independent research projects. Three of who went on to graduate with honors by writing a research-based thesis. • Mastered data analysis, molecular biology and biochemical techniques established in this laboratory, which resulted in a publication• Responsible for introducing a new model organism to the laboratory (Saccharomyces cervisiae). Involved finding new techniques, troubleshooting and optimizing protocols, and educating others in the laboratory, which resulted in a publication in a higher impact journal
