I maintain a herd of about 25 Nubian & LaMancha dairy goats and are currently focusing our efforts on producing goats milk soap. I cater to a wide range of clients and thus maintain a TB/Brucellosis Accredited/Certified herd, a certified scrapie-free herd and have tested negative for CAE for 30 years. I have been a member of the American Dairy Goat Association since 1987. I am Now President-elect and have also served as President & Vice President of the Georgia Dairy Goat Breeders Association (GDGBA) for many of the 30 years that I have been involved with dairy goats. My husband and I are also editors of the GDGBA newsletter.

I am participating in a 4 yr NSF grant -the LISELL-B project (Language-Rich Inquiry Science with English Language Learners through Biotechnology) which is aimed at understanding and supporting the teaching of science, engineering & academic language development of middle and high school students with a special emphasis on English language learners (ELLs) (Latinos). Each summer we will be holding Academies both for teachers and students. For the teacher academy, the teachers (30) will be trained in activities based on biotechnology and then the next 2 weeks, they will then mentor the students during the student academy where students (60 grades 6-9th) will repeat the teacher biotechnology based activities and will also have additional activities which will focus on language, career, college etc. During the school year, we will be holding Sat morn. academies which will include the students, their families and their teachers.

To increase student interest in science/biotechnology, I developed an outreach program (modeled after those in California) that teaches middle and high school teachers biotechnology lab skills & how to do biotechnology based labs in their classroom. My program which is supported by grants (DOL, Work Ready & Teacher Quality) and the biotechnology faculty at Athens Technical College holds workshops in the summer and during the year that cover simple pipetting to the more advanced PCR. I also provide in-class support, loan biotechnology lab equipment, provide information through a newsletter, trouble shoot and develop new labs.

As a research Scientist with Avigenics (now called Synageva) I was part of a team of scientists and technicians that oversaw the transition of the company from a research & development company to a pharmaceutical company. During my tenure, I was the manager of their GMP protein processing facility, performed surgical procedures on chickens, developed SOP's and protocols, developed a chicken semen freezing protocol which lead to the regeneration of lines of transgenic birds that were deceased, performed experiements for R&D, protein purification, DNA manipulation, ran routine assays-ELISA and LD tests.

Performed routine lab assays: ELISA, RIA etc, surgery on adult and fetal swine, sample and tissue collection. Conducted research on factors related to the proliferation and differentiation of fat cells and assisted in projects related to understanding neurological control of feeding behavior. Utilized sterile technique, developed NPY and IGF-I assays for use on rat samples, primary cell culture on rat adipose tissue, 2-D electrophoresis, westerns, measured various proteins and steroids utilizing RIA, ELISA and IRMA’s, conditioned media production,
