Teaching White-Collar Crime and Mock Trial in the Criminal Justice Department.

"Justice & The Courts" is an introduction to the the justice system through mock trial. Students learn about the roles of judges, attorneys, witnesses and juries. Students practice jury selection, opening statements and closing arguments, direct and cross examination, and evidence presentation. Students develop critical thinking skills by forming a theory of the case, practice advocacy, and learn about legal ethics and professionalism.

Create safer neighborhoods through strategic code enforcement. Proactively gain compliance from commercial, multi-tenant, and single family property owners for code, environmental, and zoning violations; prosecute lawsuits when compliance initiatives fail. Draft legal opinions and conduct legal research. Train police and code officers on criminal and civil law. Coordinate the resources of various city, state, and federal departments to abate egregious code violations related to public health and safety.Develop strategies to rehabilitate the offender and the restore community. Educate probationers and parolees on employment strategies at Project Safe Neighborhood, where we also provide preventative education related to gun crimes. Annually organize and host the Opportunity Works Job & Resource Fair, which features primarily second chance, background friendly employers. Specifically, 85 employers and 1,200 job seekers attended in 2014, and 110 employers and 400 job seekers attended in 2015 and 2016.Develop and implement crime prevention strategies. Regularly, I educate multi-family owners and managers on best leasing practices to reduce crime in high density, high crime neighborhoods through the Gold Star Program and a business crime watch group, the Safe Streets Collaborative. In 2014, I coordinated “Operation Crackdown,” a partnership with the Texas National Guard to demolish vacant, dilapidated drug houses in Dallas.Engage the community. Bi-monthly, I host a meeting of 30 neighborhood crime watch leaders featuring speakers on crime reduction and crime prevention strategies. I also implement and lead business crime watch groups in partnership with the police department. Assistant District Attorney, September 2008 – June 2012Responsible for the investigation and prosecution of felony, misdemeanor, and juvenile offenses in district and county courts. Prosecuted jury trials and court trials and hearings, including voir dire, witness examination, and arguments. Managed a felony docket of approximately 700 cases, presented cases to the grand jury, briefed legal issues for the judge, evaluated and prepared cases for trial. While in law school, I compiled a database of the procedures for applying for a protective order in each county in Texas to aid Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid attorneys with their representation of intimate partner violence victims. Acquired legal documents for the attorneys.

While in law school, I developed the Child Abuse Nurse Examiner Orientation to help nurses identify signs of abuse, understand their role as the nurse expert witness in a trial, and understand the law concerning child abuse.

As the Central Region Program Coordinator, I assisted 134 U.S. Representatives in recognizing the volunteer service of their constituents ages 14-24. I also coordinated the National Award Ceremony.
