As the Grade 12 Social Studies teacher for four graduating classes at this small Title 1 charter school, I built a project-based curriculum for the Government and Economics courses at the school. Working closely with my department to facilitate vertical alignment in our course offerings and across disciplines to encourage horizontal alignment with the core subject teachers at each grade level, we were able to elevate student engagement and performance. Additionally, incorporating field trips, field work, and interdisciplinary study, my students had a chance to have hands-on, experiential learning, even through the pandemic. In my role as the Social Studies Department Chair I supported a group seven teachers in the humanities as well as serving as a coach for three teachers as they completed their California Credential process. I also was a member of the Instructional Leadership Team, where I worked with our schools leaders to address issues at our school, strengthen performance and culture, and support teachers.I also served as an advisor for two cohorts (Class of 2020 and Class of 2023) I worked with a group of 20 students over the course of our time together at the school. Working in a team with the other advisors of the same grade, we focused on a curriculum that emphasized SEL education, community building, computer literacy, academic support, and college awareness/preparation. Additionally, I worked closely with the families of all of my advisees hosting biannual family meetings and weekly check-ins with parents.

I served as the Humanities Lead for a 7-8 grade cohort at the SoMa location of this experimental lab school where the vision was to develop a software platform to personalize learning by allowing for individualized pacing, support, and assessment. Working directly with engineers I was able to see where the worlds of education and tech came together - sometimes in beautifully complementary aspect and sometimes with vastly divergent needs and priorities. This environment allowed me to push my pedagogy in many new ways and to bring my expertise to a new environment. Although the hurdles were many, the successes we had were amazing and the work proved to be extraordinarily prescient with the onset of the pandemic two years later and massive adoption of online learning.

Social Studies teacher in the Arts & Humanities SLC (California Partnership Academies Small Learning Community) at Berkeley High School. Responsible for World History (grade 10), Government (grade 12), Economics (grade 12), and co-lead the Senior Internship Program a unique CPA program designed to place seniors in professional settings for the duration of their senior year to gain practical working experience and develop a professional profile to take with them as they move on from secondary school.I have also worked extensively with local public television network KQED. By using KQED's Do Now program which incorporates Twitter in the social studies classroom as a current events forum to allow my students to engage with others across the country and around the world, my students get to grow their skills in technology as well as develop their critical thinking and current events knowledge.

On returning from a five year stint in Asia, I took a one year emergency position at Albany High School in the California Bay Area. I taught Freshman English and Advanced Placement Literature (grade12). Additionally, I was part of the Freshman debate project, an interdisciplinary project that spanned six weeks across three core classes culminating in a public debate competition.

I had the opportunity to work in an incredibly dynamic educational setting at NTK in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong in a number of roles, primarily as a Humanities instructor, but also as an editor and lead teacher. The curricular scope offered private and group lessons for international and local students and the subjects I taught including, but were not limited to: International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme; Advanced Placement (College Board); TOEFL, GCSE, IGCSE; Test preparation [SAT, ACT, ISEE, GRE]; College Essay Writing (Personal Statements).

During my nine year tenure in the WCSD I worked at Procter R. Hug High School, Reno (1996-1999), Incline High School, Incline Village (1999-2002); Sparks High School, Sparks (2002-2005).As a social studies instructor I taught World History, World Geography, US History, American Government, and AP Human Geography (a program I piloted for the State of Nevada.)Additionally, I coached girls basketball at the varsity level (Hug, Incline, Sparks High) and track and field (Incline High).
