As a proponent of holistic healthcare, my zeal for health coaching is both innate and unwavering. I promote personal accountability for all and strongly encourage patients, particularly those living with diabetes, to become active participants in the management of their health. I am passionate about guiding others to achieve long-lasting and effective behavior change to improve their health and quality of life.My personal experience as a type 1 diabetic for more than 25 years - along with having maintained an A1c of 4.9% during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy and successfully sustaining weight loss of 100 pounds for 20 years - allows me to truly empathize with and effectively aid my patients in a compassionate manner. As a family nurse practitioner for nearly a decade, I have a comprehensive understanding of disease processes and the corresponding evidence-based interventions. Where I have thoroughly enjoyed working as a nurse practitioner, I have found that I am able to make the greatest impact by incorporating health coaching in practice and by serving to educate and empower those living with diabetes. Not only does person-centered approach of health coaching allow me to truly understand the true needs and goals of each patient, but also allows me to address ambivalence appropriately by leveraging what means most to the individual. This is especially crucial when it comes to effective diabetes management. I am a native of the beautiful island of Bermuda, having moved to the United States at the tender age of 14. As such, I have a deep understanding of how immigrating to a new country can be challenging and I am empathetic to the notion of "culture-shock". Further, having lived in a country with a wide variety of cultures and nationalities has amplified my drive to provide culturally-competent coaching.
