Participatory Budgeting (PB) enables local people to decide on the issues that matter to them. Helping them to understand public spending, put forward their own ideas and vote on them. [https://pbpartners.org.uk/]I truly believe that PB can help to empower individuals and groups: it is an obvious method to increase their confidence and to achieving their goals (improving their locality), and it has the added benefit of increasing community cohesion.I have been passionate about PB since 2008 when my company, Amanda Murrell Associates Ltd, was formed, and I am keen for PB to increase. My reasons for being involved with the PB Network, steering group and PB Partners is to assist in giving PB momentum and to increase the knowledge within all sectors - particularly within voluntary organisations.I have been involved with PB training programmes since 2008 on behalf of the Consultation Institute. I have worked with other PB partners to deliver various courses on PB, some that have been generic and others that have been co-developed and delivered. Examples include bespoke courses for Guy’s & St Thomas' Hospital, NHS Cambridge, Leicestershire CCG and a vast number of public effective PB courses for the Consultation Institute in partnership with the previous PB Unit. I have been advising and supporting Angus Council in Scotland with their PB project, which was part of the overall PB programme for Scotland in 2015, and is also involved with a PB project in Hackney for Connect Hackney CVS. Working extensively in Scotland with the Scottish National Party, who is setting the pace in Scottish politics and amongst the many pledges in its 2016 manifesto is a target of at least 1% of all local government spending being decided through ‘Community Choices’. Through our work we have established best practice in participatory budgeting and enabled the elected members to improve service delivery and empower their communities.

Bedfordshire BusinessWomen (BBW) was founded in 1988 and I was delighted to be President for the 25th Anniversary year.BBW is a not-for-profit award winning networking organisation for women who live and/or have business interests in Bedfordshire. Any money generated is donated to the charity of the year – for 2013 we supported The Road Victims Trust, a local charity providing support to the victims of road traffic accidents.The secret to the success of BBW is the informality; the promotion of inclusivity which enables similar businesses to collaborate with great success; BBW provides a support mechanism for women in business, including networking opportunities and social events; and the sharing of good practice, practical advice and tips in a friendly and welcoming environment.Amanda Murrell - President 2012/13

Responsible for the communications and consultation strategy and its implementation for Woodberry Down, one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe at the time.Reporting to the Programme Director, with overall management responsibility for the communication and consultation team along with the local community centre and its staff, the lead for developing and maintaining relationships with all key stakeholders including members, officers and leading politicians. The lead Officer for creating and maintaining a constructive relationship with the local residents’ Estate Development Committee, working with its members to ensure the project was delivered on time and to the quality standards set.
