I had the pleasure to serve as Hospital Chaplain for over a decade. This role allowed me to support and work with hospital administrators in Virginia. Working directly with the Center of Housing Advocacy, my team provided information and support for the tenets affected by the Virginia Residential Landlord-Tenant Act. This included referral support from appropriate social service agencies and/or community programs. Additionally, I supported the housing stability specialists with their caseload and by maintaining complete working files, activity documentation, and copies of all corresponding paperwork. Lastly, this role allowed me to gain knowledge of federal fair housing laws by gathering initial information for fair housing advocacy and participating in fair housing processes.

My time with Housing Opportunities Made Equal served as a professional introduction to my extensive career in social work in the state of Virginia. I worked to educate tenants regarding the Virginia Residential Landlord-Tenant Act and conducted training sessions for the Department of Social Services & Goodwill so that current and potential tenants could understand their rights. I also designed and implemented a foreclosure recovery group which focused on providing practical information, grief processing and was used as a model for future foreclosure recovery support groups.

This role centered around policy work within the Virginia State legislature. A summation of my tasks includes analyzing and tracking policies that affected local agencies and building relationships with elected officials in order to advocate for Virginia's most vulnerable citizens. I often met with state legislators and attended committee hearings during the 2012 Virginia General Assembly as a representative of the organization and testified on bills of interest at the Virginia General Assembly.Lastly, I regularly wrote letters to elected officials, op-eds for news media, and letters to the editor on behalf of the organization members and partners.
