Hi, my name is Amanda Melvin and I am a 3L J.D. Candidate at Stetson University - College of Law. I graduated from the University of Florida in May of 2021 with a B.S. in Public Relations.Currently I am working towards pursuing my passions and growing as a professional in the legal field. My two focuses for the year have been in Consumer Advocacy and golf accessibility. I am the Public Relations Chair on the founding executive board for Stetson Law Golf Association. I have been working with the club to teach basic lessons in golf to students who have not had the opportunity to learn. My hope is that our students can take this skill and connect more with current attorneys on the course. I am the Secretary-elect for the Consumer Advocacy Society. I have spent my 2L year taking the courses Stetson has offered in consumer law and taking any opportunity to learn from professionals in this field, with the goal of making myself the best advocate I can be, for consumers. I attended the annual conference for consumer protection hosted by NACA & NCLC and I am extremely grateful for the skills I gained there from incredible professionals. I wrote my seminar paper on international consumer law and intellectual property law, focusing on the issues around social media and influencers. In this paper, I compared those issues internationally, with a focus on the USA, Canada, and Spain.I was inspired to choose this topic and these countries after I spent the last summer in Madrid, Spain with Stetson’s study abroad program. During the program I took courses in Cyber Law & Comparative Workplace Studies (US vs EU). I also got to meet with professionals from the Spanish Agency of Data Protection, where we discussed the current issues we are facing in data protection. These are issues that follow current trends in consumer protection, and have given me a perspective on how consumer law is evolving internationally. My hope for my upcoming 3L year is to share my passion for consumer protection with my fellow students at Stetson and grow awareness in the field. I am also optimistic that I will be able to pursue a career in consumer protection following my graduation.
