Sunnybrook Hospital is Canada's first and largest regional trauma center. In 2018, we had over 61,000 emergency room visits with the highest number of life-threatening cases. I was one of five Patient Flow Specialists at Sunnybrook and our primary role was to coordinate all in-patient movement for nearly 500 acute care beds. Most of our intake comes from the Emergency Department and OR. We are in constant communication with these departments as well as others and we made decisions about patient movement based on our high-level overview of hospital occupancy pressures. Almost always, there was more demand than there was availability of beds. The most interesting part of this position was the critical thinking and problem solving in collaboration with team leaders and coordinators in order to identify bottlenecks in flow and to get the right patient into the right beds.

The Critical Care Nursing Resource Team (CCNRT) is comprised of highly trained critical care nurses who play an essential role in preventing staffing shortages or use of agency-hired nurses. Being a part of this team was an incredible opportunity, not only for sponsorship in completing my Critical Care Nursing Certificate with George Brown College, but also for expanding my bedside skillset and broadening my exposure to different clinical work processes and cultures. I was committed to continuously creating personal learning plans and participating in educational events to maintain proficiency while working within CRCU, B5ICU, D4ICU, RTBC, CVICU and the Emergency Department. I was also a member of the CCNRT Education Practice Council and worked with the Critical Care Medicine physicians to update hospital clinical practice policies.

The Interprofessional Resource Team (IRT) of St. Joseph's Hospital Toronto is made up of incredibly adaptable and capable Registered Nurses. We provided safe, person-centered patient care whether we were in the Medical Short Stay, Cardiology, Stroke, Renal/Hepatic, Medicine, Surgical, Oncology units or over in the Psychiatric ICU, Mental Health units or Emergency Department. During my time with this team, I developed a commitment to self-directed learning and an ability to work competently under stressful and fast-paced environments.

Centre For Simulation-Based Learning

The Peer Tutoring Program is an evidence-informed, supportive space for undergraduate nursing students. Peer Tutors are experienced upper-year nursing students who are committed to using their clinical expertise and effective teaching/learning strategies to help students learn and practice important clinical skills. Within this role, I was able to strengthen my communication and teaching skills as well as gain experience in accessing and applying Best Practice Guidelines, Clinical Standards and critically appraised research studies. Specifically, the skills taught/practiced included: wound care and dressings, IV insertion and therapy, SC and IM injections, administering bronchodilators/other inhaled medication, performing head-to-toe assessments, NG tube insertion and care, airway and tracheostomy care, foley catheter insertion and maintenance, safe transfers and repositioning, and hygiene and toileting.

Student Liaison Office

Prospective students who visited the campus had the opportunity to attend a campus tour free of charge. All campus tour guides received training related to mental health awareness, accessibility, student support resources and health and safety. This role allowed me to share my enthusiasm about the campus with others, and develop my interpersonal communication skills while interacting with parents, counsellors and students.

Student Success Centre

In this role, I worked closely with the Leadership Development Program Director of the Student Success Centre to provide leadership development programming for McMaster students. I honed project management skills while planning and executing many programs and events including the Student Success Leader Orientation, MacLEAD Workshop series, Mary E. Keyes Leadership Development Certificate, Women's Leadership Summit, McMaster Student Leadership Conference, and more. Some of these events would involve over 500 participants and extend into the Hamilton community. I also gained exposure to working with large datasets as I maintained excel spreadsheets related to the office's leadership development offerings and produced end-of-year engagement reports.

Department Of Pediatrics

I co-authored a research paper published in the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Study results were also disseminated via poster presentations at the University of Alberta Poster Symposium (July 2014) and the Canadian Digestive Diseases Week (February 2015). I received mandatory aseptic technique and animal husbandry training prior to the start of this position. I practiced using clinical judgement to accurately monitor and maintain health of the piglets involved in this study. I gained experience in and actively participated in research methodology.
