Research Scientist in the Bioproducts group at POET. As the world leader in biofuel production, we at POET consistently strive to innovate with new products, methods, and mechanisms to make the world a better place. Previously I worked at the University of Chicago, in the lab of Jean Greenberg, in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology. My work integrated fields of plant immunity, bacteriology, biochemistry, and proteomics. Using biochemical and proteomic techniques to understand the role of post-translational modification in the modulation of the plant immune system in response to bacterial infection. In my graduate work in the Department of Biochemistry at Duke University, I worked on bacterial stress pathways and their connections to antibiotic resistance. My research focused on the role of outer membrane vesicles as cellular decoys, adsorbing some common environmental and clinical stressors. I also studied the role of this defense mechanism in poly-microbial communities, attempting to better understand how these membranous blebs may interact with other bacterial species especially under stressful conditions. As an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota, I worked in Dr. Claudia Schmidt-Dannert's lab. As an Undergraduate Research Assistant. My senior thesis project was built around mutating an enzyme to change substrate specificity in order to create a biosynthetic pathway to make vanillin in E. coli. Vanillin is in everything that tastes and smells like vanilla.Specialties: Bacterial culture and growth optimization, assay creation and optimization, PCR, protein expression and purification, expression systems, bacteriophage, general microbiology, membrane biochemistry, proteomics, mass spectrometry, chromatography, plant biology, FSMA compliance, HAACP analysis, AOCS/AOAC methodologies in animal feed
