Hi! My name is Amara, and I am from the island of Guam. I am a Mākālei Honors student at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa majoring in Biology. I am interested in alleviating existing healthcare disparities in the Pacific region and aspire to become a physician to serve my community. I look forward to gaining more experience in various research and clinical settings with the goal of improving the quality of life and access to care for underserved communities and beyond.

  Health Opportunities & Medical Exposure (H.O.M.E.) Guam

  One of 24 students on Guam selected to shadow a physician for Summer 2024. Mentor was Dr. Mariana Cook-Huynh, who specializes in Family Medicine, Women's Health, and Obstetrics.Experience:- 85+ hours of inpatient and outpatient physician shadowing under Dr. Mariana Cook-Huynh- Patient interactions with high-risk OB patients, women, and children- Observed a C-section birth and vaginal delivery-Observed well women exams, well-child visits, pap smears, STD and HPV testing, birth control insertion, and induction of labor - Observed diagnoses of gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and neonatal jaundice- Conducted fetal height measurements, performed fetal heart rate monitoring using a doppler device, and assisted in identifying body structures and the heart of a baby through ultrasounds- Learned to read results of neonatal non-stress tests (NSTs) and determined if results are reactive or nonreactive- Became well versed with birth control options and genetic screening options for pregnant patients- Researched on gestational and chronic conditions experienced by patients and medical procedures done in clinicThe opportunity to shadow Dr. Mariana Cook-Huynh in the field of Women’s Health was both an eye-opening and reaffirming experience. I cannot emphasize enough how this program encouraged me to consider becoming a physician in Women’s Health and the potential impact I could have on the lives of many women, a patient demographic who has been historically underserved and overlooked. Through my time at Sagua Mañagu and at Guam Memorial Hospital, I witnessed first hand the importance of providing quality care to our island’s female population and the various healthcare disparities that patients face under Guam’s healthcare system. My aspirations to help my community are supported and reaffirmed by my time in this program, most especially by the patient interactions I have experienced.
