About Amaresh Datta

I am a physicist with years of experience in analysing data in experimental particle physics and writing analysis codes in C and C++. I have experience in teaching and especially mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. My expertise is in working with large amount of experimental data from collider and fixed target experiments, doing statistical analysis of the said data and working in diverse environments of large collaborations.

Spin Physics Detector (SPD) is a proposed experiment at the Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) at the JINR in Dubna, Moscow Region, Russia. It will probe compositions of hadrons like protons and deuterons by studying particles created in the collisions of polarized and unpolarized hadrons. Of special interest are the transversely polarized gluon distributions inside the hadrons. Gluons are the carriers of the strong (QCD) force in nature and their distributions inside the basic building blocks of nature (protons) are not very well understood. My work here includes : 1) Monte Carlo simulation studies of the underlying physics to be probed in the proposed experiment 2) Study of the quantitative effect of the future measurements at the SPD towards a global understanding of the various polarized and unpolarized gluon distributions inside hadrons3) Development of a Technical Design Report (TDR) for the proposal.

Our group here at UH Manoa is one of the leading teams searching for dark matter candidates using cosmic ray particles data. Excess anti-particle productions are signatures of dark matter decays and/or annihilations. Anti-deuterons in cosmic rays, in particular, are a much cleaner signal of dark matter decays as production of anti-deuterons from standard model particles are heavily suppressed. Our group has the two pronged focus of detecting anti-deuterons in the cosmic ray particles and understanding production mechanism of (anti-)deuterons from (anti-)protons and (anti-)neutrons from collider data.We are associated with the space-based experiment Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on board the International Space Station (ISS) that collects cosmic ray data and the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN collider facility that collects fixed target collision data for a variety of targets and beams and beam energies. techniques and analyses of data two different collaborations are exchanged seamlessly among the group to achieve the best results.Part of my focus is analyzing the NA61 recorded and simulated with a goal to measure the production cross-section and further the understanding of production mechanism of composite particles like deuterons and anti-deuterons. The non-perturbative process of combination of (anti-)protons and (anti-)neutrons to form (anti-)deuterons is termed 'coalescence'. The underlying mechanism and parametric description of it has not been studied sufficiently. Our work will shed light on the details of the process and help to formulate a better parametric description of the underlying process.Other part of my research involves analyzing cosmic ray data recorded by AMS to identify deuterons, anti-deuterons, protons and anti-protons. The goal is to measure the flux of cosmic ray particles and their ratios to understand the production mechanism and transport through the intergalactic medium.

    Post Doctoral Fellow
University Of New Mexico Feb 2012 - Jul 2015
Research at Brookhaven National Laboratory in PHENIX collaboration studying polarized proton-proton collision data to understand nucleon structure. Research focused at the study of production mechanism and the spin asymmetries in production of the J/Psi mesons. Drell-Yan processes and the spin asymmetries in the process is another focus of the present research. The double spin asymmetry measurements will be used to constrain polarized gluon distribution in protons and transverse single spin asymmetries are possibly useful in understanding the orbital angular momentum of the nucleons inside proton.
