PostdocUniversity Of Wisconsin-Madison 2012 - 2013Madison, Wi, UsAt the University of Wisconsin, I spent my time genetically engineering a fast growing strain of photosynthetic bacteria for cost effective wastewater treatment and chemical production. To accomplish this, I created a comprehensive set of genetic tools for controlling gene expression in the fast growing cyanobacteria Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002. My biochemical expertise is centered in synthetic biology, protein chemistry and natural product engineering and discovery. Community outreach and mentorship is also very important to me. I helped launch the first expanded polystyrene recycling and reuse program on the UW-Madison campus and mentored a team of undergraduates that is working on better ways to reuse and recycle shipping waste. I also helped with K12 science outreach camps, developing a new cyanobacteria activity module for middle school aged students.I sought out opportunities to gain teaching during my postdoctoral fellowship. I participated in a Microbiology teacher training program and taught an upper division one credit class teaching cutting edge microbiological research from primary literature.
