Amber Cook is a BSN, RN, 200-HR certified yoga teacher with specialized training in perinatal yoga and meditation. Amber has worked in the Emergency room and Primary Care at a Military Treatment Facility. While living in Japan, she volunteered as a Coordinator for Stroller Warriors® Saasebo. In the ER she learned time management skills, the ability to notice subtle changes, and how to remain calm while working in a pressured and chaotic environment. She was able to perfect my skills in placing IV's and catheters. I learned to keep patients up to date on the plan of care, inform providers of the status of the patient following interventions, and provide excellent discharge teaching. Her experience in the outpatient clinic enhanced her time management skills and taught her how to manage a schedule. It gave her the opportunity for deeper connections with patients. The clinic setting immersed her in the military community. In her role as coordinator for Stroller Warriors® Sasebo, she was given a unique opportunity to be a leader in the military spouse community. This role showed me a love for working with women, especially mothers. In this role, I was able to show other military spouse mothers how to navigate self-care while living overseas and frequently solo parenting due to the fast pace of the duty station we were at. In addition to my nursing experience, I have training as a certified yoga teacher with specialized education in meditation and perinatal yoga. I desire to pursue a Perinatal Mental Health certification. My goal as a nurse, yoga teacher, and military spouse is to create a world where mothers raising babies in the military community have the support they need to show up as the best version of themselves. Through building community, providing education and mentorship I will do my part to create a world where new mothers don't feel like they have to do this life alone. I aim to help mothers feel equipped and confident as they learn their new role as mothers. I hope to do this through hosting support groups, opportunities for mentorship, and educational newsletters. Mothers deserve to feel supported in their various roles, and I desire to help provide this within the family medicine model.
