About Amber Elferink
Virtual Reality (VR) and controlling a robot from a distance (telerobotics) could practically allow for teleportation to any place on Earth or imaginable. To achieve this, both haptics (feeling VR) and locomotion (walking in VR) can make this feel natural and are two of the main points I want to contribute to. If you are curious about my interests in the projects I have done, feel free to look around at my portfolio: http://amberelferink.com

Master Thesis Internship
With Freeaim VR shoes, you can walk in virtual reality, while the shoes keep you centred within your play space. For a video, click the icon below, then "View". My thesis goal was to research the best method to map the physical movement of walking on VR shoes to movement in VR (locomotion). Development for this included rewriting the PC side software to improve the responsiveness of the shoes by communication (C++ PC side and Arduino), linking it to OpenVR, developing a Unity environment to compare locomotion options including a user test, and cooperating on the tracking and positional correction.
Vr Input Developer - Internship
SenseGlove creates haptic gloves to grab, hold and feel objects in virtual reality (VR). My role in this internship was to add hardware to the gloves, such as a joystick and buttons. Creating the electronics, firmware, software and CAD were all part of this internship. This was done respectively in C, C#, Unity and Autocad Fusion 360. The end result was a comfortable joystick and button implementation and a well-received demo. The joystick and button functionality was fully implemented in the current SenseGlove software. This is the first step to make the gloves compatible out of the box with many games and simulations available on the market.
Software Developer
From tracking real time objects to building windmills on a 3D interactive map, the projects are very diverse. Fair2 Media makes and realizes concepts to engage with people at events. The Ditou table is an example. A map is projected on a table and, with a camera, some objects on the surface are tracked. Those can be used to interact with the map. I have worked on software to easily build the map and interactive objects in Unity, but also to track the objects with the camera with OpenCV and C++.

Examples are:- Assisting in multiple U-talent workshops. The U-talent courses are available for secondary school students that perform outstandingly well and want to take additional lessons in a wide variety of subjects. This includes the Arduino, Simulation and games and Music programming.- Translating the Kangaroo Mathematics competition for the visually disabled.- Helping organize and assisting at conferences such as the Woudschoten Chemie beurs and Research Funding Days.- Independently giving practical classes in Gas Chromatography at high schools with two other students. Various tasks in education at high schools: - Teaching Arduino to high school students. - Independently giving practical classes in Gas Chromatography at high schools with two other students. - Translating the Mathematics Kangaroo competition for the visually disabled.
Teaching Assistant Logics
These lessons are part of a first year course in the Informatics Bachelor. I assisted this course, which means answering students questions about homework in dedicated hours throughout the week. Additionally, they were required to do a minitest every friday, to which I explained the answers afterwards. Topics include- (Infinite) Sets and relations- Truth tables- Proof and semantics with predicate logics (Natural deduction, Hilberts system, CNF, DNF, normal forms, etc)- Prolog

Bachelor Thesis
Functionalization of silicon nanocrystals with chromophores and PEG:Synthesis of silicon quantum dots attached to light absorbing molecules, to increase the efficiency in absorbing UV-light and therefore increasing efficiency in emittance of light. Optional application: Solar concentrators.Under supervision of: prof. P. Ceroni
Student Internship
Executing algorithms and evaluating the results to optimalise the HADDOCK (protein docking) scoring function under supervision of prof. dr. A.M.J.J. Bonvin.
Student Internship
Research internship at Physical & Colloidal Chemistry UtrechtSynthesis of butterfly-shaped particles out of cubes by etching with acid. Then attaching SH-groups on 'the wings' of the butterfly. Analysis: adding gold particles which would bind to the SH-groups and analysis with TEM would show whether the SH groups were actually attached during synthesis.Under supervision of: dr. B.H. Erné
