I absolutely love teaching music. Over the course of my fifteen year teaching career I feel fortunate that I have had the experience of teaching general and choral music to pre-k through 12th grade students in rural, suburban, and urban districts. I loved all of my teaching assignments and the challenges and rewards they offered. Regardless of the grade level I’m teaching, I always strive to provide a classroom environment that students feel welcome and safe so they can feel comfortable sharing their ideas and feel safe trying new things.My most recent elementary teaching experience was at Hibbard Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois. I worked with kindergarten through sixth grade students who came from very diverse cultures and backgrounds. During my time there, I was able to acquire ukuleles, keyboards, and guitars for the students to use during music class. All of the third through sixth grade students had the opportunity to learn the basics of playing some or all of these instruments throughout the year. Many of these students were so excited about what they’d learned that their families purchased one of these instruments for them to be able to continue playing music at home. It was such a joy to see them so eager to share with me and others what they’d learned and their desire to continue learning.In my middle school general music classes, I’ve taught units that help students explore and learn many aspects of music including; music theory, music history, composition, how to sing, and play the ukulele, guitar, bass guitar, drum set, keyboard, recorder, and harmonica. I love the variety of units we are able to explore in general music classes because it has always given me a chance to learn new things from my students. I also love teaching middle school choir, because it gives me the opportunity to help students keep singing through the voice change, and help them find their voice individually and within the ensemble. My family will be relocating to the Portland Maine area this summer so I am looking for a job where I can contribute positively to the learning community and can continue to learn and grow as a music teacher.
