Dr. Amber Mace is the Managing Director and Chief of Strategic Partnerships at the California Academy of Sciences where she is responsible for aligning the Academy's work with its strategy. Mace oversees the divisions dedicated to science and education, with a focus on deepening and expanding the Academy’s regional, national, and international partnerships.Previously she served as the Chief Executive Officer of the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST), a nonpartisan, nonprofit corporation established in 1988 to advise the state of California on matters of science and technology. As CEO, Mace builds on CCST’s values of service, independence, and partnership, which are anchored in CCST’s foundational commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion to provide strategic leadership to increase CCST’s impact of bridging science, technology, and policy to inform and advance science-based policy change for California, the fifth largest economy in the world.Mace brings to CCST more than two decades of leadership experience working at the nexus of science and policy, drawing on her extensive background in environmental policy and marine ecology. During her tenure, she has built a diverse and high-performing team to deliver scientific guidance to the state of California on a range of important issues including disaster resilience and adaptation, climate change, and energy policy. Always driving toward continuous improvement, during her time at CCST, she grew the organization in size and impact raising over $40 million from individuals, foundations, and the state to support CCST programs. Through her collaborative and inclusive approach and as a systems thinker and skilled communicator, Mace has spearheaded many cross-sectoral partnerships to tackle some of today’s most complex and pressing issues. Prior to CCST, Mace was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger as Assistant Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency and Executive Director of the California Ocean Protection Council. Previously she served as Executive Director of the California Ocean Science Trust and Science Advisor to the Ocean Protection Council. Mace was awarded a California Sea Grant State Fellowship to the California Natural Resources Agency, and a NOAA Sea Grant John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship in the U.S. Senate. She was recognized as a Coastal Hero by Sunset magazine in 2011 and her California coastal research experience includes piloting a one-person submersible vessel at the Farallon Islands, as part of the National Geographic Sustainable Seas Expedition.
