My current position investigates post-stroke behavioral recovery and its influence on neural activity and plasticity in residual sensorimotor cortex.

My dissertation research focused on the use of a novel treatment approach, motor cortical stimulation (CS), for stroke-induced functional impairments. I have recently discovered that combining CS with motor rehabilitative training results in functional improvements that persist for at least 9-10 months after the end of treatment compared to rats receiving rehabilitative training alone. In addition, my focused on understanding the most efficacious method of delivery and effective timing of… Show more My dissertation research focused on the use of a novel treatment approach, motor cortical stimulation (CS), for stroke-induced functional impairments. I have recently discovered that combining CS with motor rehabilitative training results in functional improvements that persist for at least 9-10 months after the end of treatment compared to rats receiving rehabilitative training alone. In addition, my focused on understanding the most efficacious method of delivery and effective timing of this treatment after stroke-like injuries in rat and its influence on neural activity and plasticity in residual sensorimotor cortex.; I presently have experience in rodent handling, doing sensorimotor tests on small rodents, training animals on a skilled reaching task, doing rodent surgeries with cortical electrode implants, running animals on a rehabilitative task, administering electrical stimulation via the cortical electrode, perfusions, brain extractions, brain slicing with the vibratome, Nissl staining, lesion reconstruction and brain volume measurements, immunohistochemistry and processing dissected brain tissue for electron microscopy. I was the recipient of the AHA Predoctoral Award. I wrote and edited multiple scientific manuscripts that were published in peer reviewed journals. I also wrote and edited abstracts and posters that were presented at scientific meetings. In addition I am proficient in data collection, analysis and statistical procedures, using SPSS software. During this lab rotation I became proficient in jugular catheterization surgeries, working and training rodents on behavioral operant training for a reward.
