Thesis Advisor: Dr. Mary Albert, Dartmouth College, Hanover NH Modeling the Effect Firn Permeability on Pressure Loss Associated with Air Drilling -Used COMSOL software to run numeric experiments investigating potential pressure effects that result from air drilling in firn (old snow). -Results indicate that highly permeable firn near the bottom of the borehole could cause pressure loss high enough to impede drilling. -Research was accepted for publication in the Cold Regions Science and Technology Journal.Impact of Inhomogeneous Layers on Gas Diffusion through Porous Firn- Used laboratory measurements to compare gas transport through multilayered firn core samples with transport through core subsections. -Results suggest that microstructural changes on the cross sectional surface of the cores may occur from the cutting process.- For a core sample cut into two subsamples, the measured effective diffusivity of the subsamples resulted in a predicted composite diffusivity that was 66.2% of the measured effective diffusivity of the core before being cut.In Situ Measurements of Diffusivity of Seasonal Snow -Designed a new lab set-up for trace gas analysis using the LiCOR 8100A Gas Analyzer. -Presented the first in-situ measurements of effective gas diffusivity of various seasonal snow crystals. -Results found that for non-spherical crystal types, differences between model estimates of diffusivity and the measurements are at least 50%.
