About Amber Abram
I am a recent graduate of the Genetic Counseling and Public Health programs at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My current research project investigates genetic counselors’ ability to provide comprehensive and equitable care to incarcerated patients. I hope to use this work to improve health outcomes for incarcerated patient populations, who are statistically more likely to come from racially minoritized and medically underserved communities, and spark further conversations regarding incarcerated patient care. Prior to my graduate education at the University of Michigan, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with an Applied Genetics concentration and Leadership minor from the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. I was bestowed with the one of Detroit Mercy's highest student honors, the Vivere ex Missione Award, during the 2021 commencement ceremony for my commitment to servant leadership within the Detroit community. I AM a dedicated advocate and I WILL use my training and experiences to create and contribute to positive change within racially minoritized communities and for academic trainees who are navigating structural and historical racial barriers.
Listed skills include Leadership, Sterilization, Data Analysis, Research, and 5 others.

Undergraduate Student Researcher
I participated in a research project, lead by Dr. Eric Krukonis, titled "Understanding the Microbiology of Root Caries in Geriatric Patients", for three years.A short description of the project is as follows:As people age their gums often recede revealing root surfaces to bacterial colonization and caries development. In the past, a few acid-generating bacteria have been implicated in the etiology of root caries, but with modern molecular techniques the collection of bacteria shown to be associated with root caries is expanding. Using techniques of quantitative PCR and microbiome analysis on dental plaque from diseased and health root surfaces we are defining those bacteria that are more prevalent on carious root surfaces and investigating their potential contributions to root caries. Our long-term goal is to develop therapies that target root caries-causing bacteria for elimination from dental plaque.
