If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking of working with me. And if that’s the case, there are some things you need to know.1. If you ask me to pick my favorite book I’ve worked on, you might as well take a seat and get comfortable. I have developed thousands of nonfiction and fiction books, and have worked on a range of titles, including trade reference books, board books, picture books, early chapter books, middle grade, and YA. Asking me to pick my favorite is like asking me to pick which child I love best—it can’t be done. 2. I see book ideas everywhere, and may even interrupt our conversation if inspiration strikes (#sorrynotsorry). I know the qualities that make a book sell, as well as the industry trends to capitalize on and which ones to avoid. I have a track record of bringing award-winning ideas to books for the school library, trade, and classroom markets that I’d love to tell you about. (See number 1.)3. Because of my extensive experience building publishing lists, I frequently need to be reminded what year it is. I might start talking about a book we did last season, which is really coming out next season and . . . oh no, I’ve gone cross-eyed. All this list planning has very much given me and my work a strategic bent (no really, six of my top ten CliftonStrengths are in the strategic thinking domain).4. But I’m more than a strategic mind; I can edit too! My first job out of college was an editor position, and I have taken on editing jobs at different points throughout my career. I have experience managing the entire editorial process from concept to publication.5. As a high school and college hockey player, I often found myself as the team’s utility forward: tasked with playing all of the positions with all of the lines. The same adaptability has proven useful in my career. You need me to build an author pool from nothing? I’m game! You want me to create a sensitivity and inclusivity resource and training for the development team? I’m here for that too. 6. In my spare time, I write kidlit as A.L. Wegwerth.
