While finishing my MBA a few years ago, I was offered an opportunity to take the Clifton StrengthsFinder. This test whittled me down to 5 themes and it seemed quasi-astrological. I put the results aside and continued in my job as an Assistant Professor at the University of Florida. I recently came across my StrengthsFinder results and realized my strengths can be better utilized, and my sense of purpose intensified, with a career change. Here are the strengths I am bringing to the world of industry:Learner – I LOVE learning! Over 16 years in college, I amassed a bachelors, 3 masters, and a doctoral degree. I have now sworn off degree-granting education (I have 2 diplomas still in their tubes), but I still enjoy and crave learning new facts, processes, connections… basically any and all things.Ideation – This one sounds a little hippy but stay with me. This is a love of ideas – a true passion for finding the connection between seemingly disparate bits of information and sharing that information with others. I LOVE teaching, collaboration, and mentoring. These are all just opportunities to share ideas!Restorative – aka problem solving. As a biomedical researcher, this is an all day, everyday pursuit. The problems range from fixing the global health impacts of CNS disorders to the minutiae of microdissection of the subthalamic nucleus. Constant learning, strategic thinking, and collaboration are my secrets to success in problem solving. Individualization – this is understanding the value of everyone you work with. In a collaborative world, this strength is key. I have established and maintained collaborations that focused on a wide range of topics - genomic analysis of gut bacteria; deep learning algorithms that can categorize and quantify phenotypes; design and implementation of new educational and digital communications techniques for medical professionals. Delivering successful outcomes in collaboration with people with such diverse expertise was only possible by understanding the value and strengths of my colleagues.Focus – I use internal (here’s where the learner and ideation factors come in to play) and external motivating factors (fear of letting the team and firm down) to stay self-motivated and to organize, strategize, stay on track, and get the job done.Specialties: neuroscience, neurology, drug development, teaching, project management, relationship building, communication, data analytics, planning annual pilgrimages to Cactus League Spring Training.
