Numerical modelling and simulation of mechanical systems and structure has been recognised as an invaluable tool for several engineering fields, namely Mechanical and Civil, specially due to the rapidly growing computational power over the last decades. Nowadays, progressively smaller details of the bodies, such as roughness and microstructure can be embedded in numerical simulations within multi-scale numerical strategies, which renders such topic extremely attractive for research nowadays.I work as a research and teaching assistant at the Computationally Multi-Scale Modeling of Solids and Structures group (CM2S) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. In CM2S, we develop advanced and novel numerical strategies for modeling the mechanical behaviour of materials at distinct coupled and uncoupled length scales. My areas of interest are computational contact mechanics within Finite Element Method frameworks and multiscale strategies for embedding roughness at different length scales. Our research work rely on competence in code design, programming, classical mechanics of deformable bodies, several topics of mathematics, besides other highly important soft skills such as tenacity, teamwork and critical thinking. In the pedagogic scope, on which I find considerable personal and professional fulfilment, I like to transmit my passion for the subjects I teach, in particular, those related with general mechanics and strength of materials. Moreover, I try to promote a logical and structured mindset for problem solving, and also to explore different perspectives of the problems, so that students can find the easiest way to absorb different concepts, without hard-coding their brains in a rigid way.

Research AssistantFaculdade De Engenharia Da Universidade Do Porto Sep 2019 - Feb 2020Developing a general multiscale numerical framework for analysing contact between rough surfaces with the finite element method at large strains. -
Junior Teaching AssistantFaculdade De Engenharia Da Universidade Do Porto Feb 2019 - Aug 2019In parallel with my research activities during my Master's dissertation, I was responsible for the laboratory classes of Solid Mechanics of the Integrated Masters on Mechanical Engineering. In these classes, the students had the opportunity to analyse a concrete strain measurement scenario, under distinct loading conditions and stress and strain states. -
Scientific Initiation GrantFaculdade De Engenharia Da Universidade Do Porto Sep 2018 - Feb 2019In the first semester of the fifth year of the course, I got accepted for a scientific grant, under de supervision of Dr. Francisco Manuel Andrade Pires. The focus of the work developed within this period was the implementation of classical numerical methods which can be embedded in numerical frameworks for analysing the mechanical behaviour of heterogeneous materials. -
Research AssistantInegi Porto Mar 2019 - Aug 2019During my Mater's dissertation period, I collaborated with INEGI as a research Assistant, under the supervision of Dr. Francisco Manuel Andrade Pires and Eng. Rodrigo Pinto Carvalho. Our work focused on the development of numerical strategies for predicting the real contact area on elastic rough contacts, within a computational contact homogenization framework.A preprocessing toolbox comprising the numerical generation of random rough topographies and finite element mesh have been implemented from scratch, wrapping the in-house Fortran Implicit Finite Element code LINKS. In addition, the post-processing block regarding the computational homogenization has also been originally developed and implemented. The multiscale numerical framework was successfully validated, evidencing promising results for future works. Two conference publications have resulted from the work developed in this collaboration, one presented by me (António Carneiro) in the ECCOMAS Thematic Conference "Computational Methods in Multi-scale, Multi-uncertainty and Multi-physics Problems" in Porto (2019) and the other presented by Eng. Rodrigo Carvalho in the 15th U.S. National Congress on Computational Mechanics, in Austin, Texas, USA (2019). -
Scientific Initiation GrantFaculdade De Engenharia Da Universidade Do Porto Jul 2017 - Aug 2017PortoIn the summer holidays between the third and fourth year of my studies at FEUP, I had the pleasure to work along with the research team of Dr. José Manuel Laginha Mestre da Palma, focused on developing numerical strategies for analysing atmospheric flows over complex forested terrain with wind turbines. We used a in-house Fortran code based on a finite volume formulation, developed and maintained by the aforementioned team, to study the atmospheric flow over a double-hill topography in Perdigão, in the center-east of Portugal. This research project was developed in parallel with the largest wind mappig experiment at the date, under the project NEWA (New European Wind Atlas), which happened in Perdigão between 2015 and 2019, due to the particularities of the topography in that region. The outcome of this collaboration was presented in AGU Fall Meeting in 2017, under the title "The spatial resolution in the computer modelling of atmospheric flow over a double-hill forested region.". -
MonitorFaculdade De Engenharia Da Universidade Do Porto Oct 2015 - Jul 2017Porto, PortugalI was one of the monitors of the Maths and Physics Room, between my second and third year of study at FEUP. This project is fundamentally, yet by no means exclusively, targeted at first year students who struggle to fit into academic routines and to cope with the somewhat tight schedule of their teachers. Therefore, the Maths and Physics Room provide a friendly interface between high school and university, where new students at FEUP can permanently find 2 monitors (top students of FEUP, from several areas) ready to help, typically, with mathematics and physics problems. -
Research AssistantInegi Porto Feb 2016 - Jun 2016Porto, PortugalDuring the second year of the Integrated Master on Mechanical Engineering at FEUP, I was working in parallel in CETRIB, the Tribology Laboratory at FEUP in collaboration with INEGI. The main goal of the project was to characterize base oils and greases formulated with them in combination with different thickeners, in terms of the coefficient of friction (Stribeck curve) and film thickness.Under the supervision of Dr. David Gonçalves, I was responsible for performing a wide array of experimental tests in a ball-on-disk test rig for several lubricants (base oils and greases), temperatures and sliding velocities, in order to measure the lubricant film thickness (interferometry) and the coefficient of friction (load cell). Additionally, we characterized the viscosity curve of the base oils and analysed the thickener morphology under a Scanning Electron Microscope. The overall collaboration resulted in the publication "Film thickness and friction relationship in grease lubricated rough contacts", in Lubricants, 2017.
