"Graphic designer" is a vague and limiting term (in over 30 years, I don't think that I've ever designed any "graphics"), but it's humble enough, and perhaps no worse than many of the other titles we give ourselves in this business.I trained myself as a designer and typographer. And I love to do those things. But I also like to think, write, code, make music and tell people what to do with their lives (and businesses). I have a special fondness for longer-form work: books, content-heavy websites, complex collateral and brand systems, but I am media-agnostic. I don't draw distinctions among print, digital and film, because my primary interest is story, and how to express it in visual and written language. I love print, but also get a kick out of developing for the Web, which is particularly suited to the basic typographical principles I love; I've done a fair amount of work in broadcast as well.I work with my own clients and as a consultant to other firms. I've been honored to help Johnson + Wolverton (Cadillac, Comedy Central, Showtime, Lincoln, DirecTV, Sundance Channel, Polestar), Studio Jelly (Dr. Bronner's), Trollbäck + Company, Publicis NY (Citibank), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hawthorne Books, Smith & Fong, Oregon Humanities, Willamette University, Marylhurst University, Oregon Center for Contemporary Art, Linfield College, Lewis & Clark College, Portland Center Stage, Columbia Forest Products, The Forest Park Conservancy, and many more. For all of these, I've provided a mix of creative direction, strategy, writing, and plain old dirty-hands work.

I was Thom Smith's right hand for two years, and was more or less responsible for every piece of print design issuing from a successful corporate design shop. We did mostly annual reports for companies like InFocus Systems, Gardenburger, US Bancorp and others. It was the early 90s, and IPOs were popping up like mushrooms. I learned a lot, both about design and about how to run a business. I left in 1992 to work for myself, but ended up getting back in business with Thom a couple years later at The Felt Hat. He's retired now, but still a mentor.
