Hi! My name is Amee Van and I am a second-year student at the University of Southern California studying Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Documentary Filmmaking. My interests lie in the development and patenting of innovative medical devices, as well as addressing the gender bias in medical imaging accuracy. Our mission is to find a low cost and customized solution to one specific individual, whom we call a "need-knower", which we can then replicate and publish online for others to recreate.- This past year, we focused on 5 projects: 1) a motorized wheelchair component controlled by the broken-down remote/motor components of an electric skateboard, 2) a sling that helps a mother with a lack of motor control in her arms to rotate her newborn while nursing, 3) an ergonomic piece of foam to help an amputee play sled hockey with more comfort, 4) a waste scooper for a wheelchair user with tenodesis (post-surgical loss of tendon control) to pick up after her service dog, and 5) a modified brake for an Uber driver with a shin injury. As the Vice President, I oversaw all projects and provided technical assistance in the Makerspace.- Held presentations and weekly meetings for general members and reached out to professors, clinics, and rehab centers to refine/customize each project -
