As a vacation student I have worked on two projects for the Refinery. I have simulated and evaluated the financial benefit of upgrading the refinery cooling water towers. To do this, I have carried out the following steps: • Developed heat exchanger monitoring and rigorous models using PROII software• Plant troubleshooting to evaluate light end (gas) recovery, reduced flaring and optimised efficiency • Obtained refinery wide heat exchanger recovery correlation• Collected onsite data while upholding a high integrity for safetyI have also developed ongoing mass and energy balances across 3 processing units. This involved: • Control valve flow calculations and corrections • Automated key performance indicators using Excel and macro’s for plant maintenance • Ongoing Mass balance with constant closure +/- 2 from target 100%

While studying at University, I was given an opportunity to carry out work experience in the water innovation team at City West Water. This involved me working on storm water harvesting projects and a side project to develop an empirical formula for the rate of algae build-up in pipelines. As a result, I was able to determine the optimum flow through pipes to reduce algae build up and downstream maintenance issues with solenoids.
