As a ski instructor in Vail, CO I have helped individuals of all ages improve their skiing, or discover the joy of skiing for the first time. For my first two seasons I was a part-time instructor, driving up on weekends and holidays to teach classes of children ranging in ability from beginners who had never seen snow before, to more advanced skiers able to descend all but the most difficult runs. During these first years my patience and physical strength were tested as bent down to help students up each time they fell, kept them safe and warm, and made sure each student had an experience that would help them love to ski. I became a full time instructor for the 2008-2009 season which meant teaching nearly everyday, and adjusting my lessons to accommodate adults and younger children. As a ski instructor I have appreciated the ability to spend my days outdoors, and discovered the joy of helping a student to overcome a challenge they once thought impossible in order realize their own passion for skiing; a passion they will be able to share and enjoy for the rest of their lives.

I began my research on phenology and climate change with Dr Sher in order to complete a thesis in biology, and gain experience as a researcher. My analysis of herbaria records from the Denver Botanic Gardens and the University of Colorado indicated that several species native to Colorado demonstrated an earlier bloom time which had a statistically significant correlation to temperature and precipitation patterns associated with global climate change. Based on this information I completed an undergraduate thesis at the University of Denver. Since that time I have observed each individual herbarium specimen included in my research from the Denver Botanic Gardens to verify my results, and Dr. Sher and I are preparing the results for publication. Over the course of my work I have gained a new appreciation for the tremendous amount of frustration, passion and dedication behind each word in scientific research. I am excited to see the successful completion of this project, and eager to begin the research process again.
