In the summer of year 12, I undertook work experience in two local law firms, each providing me with different opportunities and experiences. During my work experience week at Gepp Solicitors, I undertook the role of a solicitor, attending meetings with clients, writing attendance notes and completing the paperwork relevant to the case. The main areas I worked in were private client (focusing on wills, probate and lasting powers of attorney) and the family department (focusing on children’s matters, divorces and finances). I was also encouraged to undertake additional legal research, as legal professionals do, broadening my knowledge beyond my A-Level specification.My work experience week at Leonard Grey was focused on commercial and property law, of which I found to be interesting and stimulating. As well as undertaking the role of a solicitor, I was fortunate enough to gain experience in the in-house conveyancing estate agents which enabled me to gain knowledge of the legalities of buying, selling and letting properties. Recently, I was successful in my application to marshal a district judge in the Exeter Law Courts. I found the day to be an enthralling experience as I was given the opportunity to ask questions about the cases I had seen, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a judge, including the difficulties they may face on a day-to-day basis. This was a completely new experience for me and one which I thoroughly enjoyed and found beneficial for my learning.
