As a student employee of a research-based hog operation, I learned many tasks such as, assisting sows with farrowing, processing of piglets, semen collection from boars, and conduction of artificial insemination. Processing of newborn piglets included, clipping needle teeth, administration of vaccines/supplements and medications, docking tails, castration, and ear notching.

Animal Science Summer Undergraduate Research Experience. Worked as a research assistant on a project, “Effect of vitamin E and selenium supplementation on reproductive outcomes in ewes.” At the Small Ruminant Education Unit, Raleigh, NC and Upper Mountain Research Station, Laurel Springs, NC. I also helped with various other projects and tasks that included forage sampling, parasite resistance studies, going to conferences and even practicing rotational grazing of cows, sheep, goats, and horses.

Here I learned to draw blood, trim hooves, assist during kidding, de-budding, vaccination routines, treatment care, fostering, colostrum health, etc.
