About Amelia Young
Amelia is a very proud Nashville native and Tennessee resident. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication in May 2017, majoring in communication studies and double minoring in journalism and theatre.In July 2017, Amelia joined the ABC/CW affiliate Eyewitness News WEHT WTVW team as a MMJ covering the Tri-State area of Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. Amelia’s story involving elementary school students creating a CD to sell for donations they’d later give to gun violence victims in schools was nominated for Best General News Story for the 2018 Spectrum Awards with the Indiana Broadcasters Association. In the fall of 2018, she traveled to Panama City to help sister station, WMBB, with Hurricane Michael coverage and the devastation it caused in the Florida panhandle.Before Memorial Day in 2019, Amelia was invited to fly with 85 veterans to Washington D.C. to cover their experience with the Honor Flight of Southern Indiana. The story was up for a nomination for Best News Feature/Use of Medium for the 2019 Spectrum Awards with the Indiana Broadcasters Association. In July 2019, Amelia moved back to her second home of Knoxville, TN to join the news team as a reporter at NBC affiliate WBIR. From the beginning, Amelia closely followed the story about a Florida elementary school boy who was bullied for his homemade University of Tennessee shirt. The story shortly gained worldwide attention and led a replica of the shirt to be produced, later raising more than $1 million dollars for an anti-bullying charity.She covered the heartbreaking impact of the deadly tornadoes in Nashville in March and Chattanooga in April. In October and November, she worked on two investigations into excessive and unnecessary use of force by correctional officers with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and a deputy with the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office. Just days before the end of the year, a bombing in Nashville wiped out almost an entire street full of homes and businesses. Amelia led her station’s coverage during that devastating day and was able to secure exclusive interviews because of her hometown connections. In July 2021, Amelia joined Nashville’s #1 station, NewsChannel 5, as a reporter for the top rated morning show in the city. She’s accomplishing her dreams by coming back home to Nashville to do what she loves most. Amelia is excited to share stories in her hometown and lead coverage for her dream station.
