About Amer Siddiq

I am an Associate Professor in psychiatry with the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. I also lead the Universiti Malaya Centre for Community Engagement (UMCares), a central facility of the university which connects our campus to the wider community.For my clinical work, I am a consultant psychiatrist who primarily serves Universiti Malaya Specialist Centre (UMSC) and my work involves general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and also smoking cessation. My primary research work is on tobacco control. I was the main coordinator for the Nicotine Addiction Research Group UMCAS and still am the Chief Coordinator for UMCAS, a centre with UM which focuses on clinical addiction related research. In tobacco research, my team and I run a smoking cessation training program which is endorsed by the Ministry of Health called SCOPE. We aim to train as many healthcare providers to be proficient in smoking cessation service. Finally, I also advocate for mental health related matters where I am the President of a local community NGO - Care Warriors Association. In my capacity as a lead in mental health here in Malaysia, I am a member of the Council for Mental Health Promotion and also assist organisations on mental health matters.
