In my work with Dr. Wayne C. Huber, I have constructed several stormwater and sanitary sewer models in SWMM5. Using GIS data to delineate the sewersheds, conversion tools to extract the data, and handbuilding model details in SWMM5 I have learned modeling techniques and data management tools. Working in a small research group with individuals of different talents has highlighted the efficacy of interdisciplinary projects.

I worked in the Albany Containerboard Mill on the industrial waste water treatment system. I conducted field sampling and wet lab water testing on effluent, surface and groundwater flows to gauge potential impacts of different system operations. I assisted with other environmental engineering sampling, testing and documentation as needed.

Clean Water Services provided me the opportunity to work with source control and NPDES requirements such as 1200-C erosion control permits for construction activities, minor plan review of development along sensitive areas, research and report writing on topics such as infrastructure assessment, fees determination, plant identification in water quality facilities, and the revisions of the design and construction standards. The most exciting aspect of this position was researching best management practices for stormwater quality management as part of a low impact development strategy of stormwater and watershed management. There are many research possibilities to be considered in determining the efficacy and wide applicability of different distributed water quality treatment systems.

I worked with GeoDesign through a competitive 6-month long internship in the Environmental Group working closely with a mentor as an entry-level engineer. During my internship I conducted fieldwork, as needed, including:• methane gas monitoring in wells and confined spaces • low-flow water collection from monitoring wells • river bottom sediment sampling by vibracore• injection of emulsified oil into TCE impacted soils for bioremediation I honed my technical writing skills with experience in writing and/or researching:• Phase I environmental site assessments• Project proposals• Construction completion reports• Weekly and monthly reports on on-going & current projects
