About Alexandra Gobeil, Ph.D.
Allie is a toxicologist with an interdisciplinary background in risk assessment, water quality, product stewardship, and environmental and ecotoxicology. In her professional career, she has been involved with projects concerning development of ecological risk assessment criteria for PFAS substances, environmental causal and impact analyses, evaluation of new and existing consumer products and product stewardship program development, and regulatory compliance. She uses her broad knowledge of biology, ecology, toxicology, and human health to assess risk and injury, support regulatory compliance, evaluate sustainability objectives, and support decision making.Allie holds a Ph.D. in Toxicology from Texas A&M University and a B.S. in Biochemistry, minor in Sustainability from Florida Institute of Technology. Her undergraduate research focused on developing methodology for small particle tracking for use in investigating quorum sensing behavior in unicellular algae. Her doctoral research focused on the development of new applications for high energy electron beam irradiation for the removal of cyanobacteria and their associated toxins from drinking water.

Microcystins in Drinking Water: Researching the use of high energy electron beam irradiation for the removal of the hepatotoxic cyanotoxin, microcystin-LR, and the cyanobacterium that produces it, from drinking water. This work focuses on identifying chemical breakdown products resulting from electron beam irradiation and their associated toxicity. Secondly, the cellular responses of Microcystis aeruginosa including morphology, physiology, and gene expression are also being investigated in response to irradiation treatment. Finally, this methodology is being employed on raw influent samples to demonstrate effectiveness for real world application.Other responsibilities include mentoring and supervising undergraduate multiple students, general lab management, and assisting with others’ research projects.Agrochemical Mixture Ecotoxicity: Investigated the effects of primary and mixture toxicities of various agrochemicals such as atrazine and ciprofloxacin at environmentally relevant conditions on the ecotoxicity to Psuedokirchneriella subcapitata, a freshwater green alga. Growth inhibition assays and chlorophyll fluorescence were utilized to evaluate primary and binary chemical mixtures.
Risk Assessor Intern
Obtaining professional experience in toxicology in the consulting field. Project aims include assisting in a SERDP funded project focused on developing ecological risk assessment criteria for poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances and becoming familiar with human and ecological risk assessment procedures and reporting for both preventative and remediation-based projects. Responsibilities include data assessment and management, calculating site specific UCLs, developing TRVs, performing QA/QC, coordinating with teams of multiple project disciplines, and participating in project meetings.
Research Assistant
Small Particle Tracking: Developed a small particle tracking methodology using Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a unicellular algae. Using this in-house modified free-ware technique, we have been able to investigate phototaxis, chemotaxis, and motility mutants using variables such as velocity, directionality, and cell size. We have also investigated bacterial quorum sensing molecule interactions with C. reinhardtii, as well as potential chemical signaling within the algal population. Characterizing ROAM response in Arabidopsis: Performed research determining the effect of reactive oxygen associated molecules on plant growth and development in Arabidopsis thaliana. Pollen Grain Barcoding: Conducted DNA barcoding for species level identification on pollen grains.

Summer Research Student
Biomarkers for Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Organ-Specific Toxicities: Researched bio-markers for indicating organ-specific toxicities caused by tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) drugs commonly used to treat cancer. This was done using a multi-directional datamining approach. Basal gene expression from rats was analyzed for differentially expressed genes and correlated with information collected on the TKIs. This work was presented at the Central Arkansas Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium and at the 2017 Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting funded by the Pfizer Society of Toxicology Undergraduate Travel Award.
Research Assistant
Sporormiella Content to Predict Megafaunal Extinction: Determined Sporormiella content in sediment cores from Lake Pacucha, Puru and Lake Llaviucu, Ecuador to estimate megafaunal extinction in South America. Pollen Identification Database: Assisted in testing the Pollen Identification for Geolocation Technology (PIGLT) database developed by the lab for forensic purposes for the Department of Homeland Security.
Youth Making Ripples Team Member
Organized submissions and led the social media campaign for Youth Making Ripples Film Festival. Youth Making Ripples is a branch of Beneath the Waves which educates K-12 students on ocean conservation issues.
Research Assistant
Climate Change Effects on Stone Crabs: Worked on research determining the effects of climate change on stone crabs embryos and development.
