In my PhD project I used high performance computing to investigate catalytic reactions on metal surfaces. Specifically, I studied how the adsorption of larger chiral molecules modifies hydrogenation reactions on Platinum surfaces to become asymmetric. The core tool used for these calculations was density functional theory, which allows approximate solutions to Schrödingers equation for systems with several thousand electrons. Python scripts were used to calculate atomic geometries, vibrational spectra, reaction barriers and simulated STM images. The research was done in collaboration with the experimental group of Professor Peter McBreen at Université Laval in Quebec.Besides research I carried out teaching duties in various physics courses, e.g. electrodynamics (theory), introductory mechanics (theory and laboratory), and numerical physics (MatLab programming).
