I thrive on problems that require initiative, creativity, and emerging technologies to solve. I have spent the last 15 years working at the intersection of life sciences, technology development, and entrepreneurship. Curiosity drives me and has pulled me into pursuits in academia, industry, and government (sometimes simultaneously) with the goal of building tools, frameworks, and teams that innovate. One of my hobbies is epistemology; the theory/study of knowledge – I like to read and think about the nature of knowledge, its limitations, and how we optimize or game the generation and curation of knowledge. Some of my favorite domains to apply this to are neuroscience, systems biology, artificial intelligence/machine learning, ideation, and mass communication.

Co Founder, Scientific AdvisorVidafuel Sep 2015 - PresentNashville, Tennessee, UsVidaFuel is on a mission to simplify the renal diet while increasing the quality of life for those living with chronic kidney disease. With a unique development team of food scientists, registered dietitians, biomedical scientists and logistical experts, VidaFuel is revolutionizing patient care by creating a line of products specifically formulated for the renal diet. Our platform combines patient education, motivation, and convenience to increase dietary compliance and improve patient outcomes. As a co-founder I developed the initial business plan and pitch deck for seed funding with the CEO, worked with medical advisors to write a clinical study for product validation, and analyze the resulting clinical data for outcomes related to kidney function and patient satisfaction. -
Research FellowNational Institutes Of Health (Nih): Intramural Research Program (Irp) Nov 2019 - May 2022Bethesda, Maryland, UsIn my final years at NIH, I worked with a team of software, camera, and HPC engineers to optimize the light-sheet microscope I built, install and configure new servers better able to manage and transfer the 4TB of data generated per hour, and finalize the documentation for broader use. I also added epifluorescence optics to permit simultaneous imaging of a fillet sample above and below the coverslip. -
Postdoctoral FellowNational Institutes Of Health (Nih): Intramural Research Program (Irp) Jul 2014 - Nov 2019Bethesda, Maryland, UsDuring my co-mentored postdoctoral fellowship, I built a custom light-sheet microscope and wrote accompanying alpha software (LabView, MatLab, python) for neuronal activity imaging in whole excised fruit fly brains to study how neuropeptides direct a critical developmental behavior. I also developed an experimental paradigm for studying behavior at single muscle-fiber resolution in behaving fruit flies to enable interrogation of the whole sensorimotor system in intact animals. For this work, I received a competitive FI2 grant as part of the PRAT Fellowship (2015-2018) and I was awarded the NIMH IRP Julius Axelrod Memorial Fellowship Training Award ($10k) in 2018. In addition to my research, I co-chaired the NIMH Fellow's Committee (2015-2018) alongside a clinical research fellow; and was a member of the NIMH Office of Fellowship Training Steering Committee (2015-2018). I also mentored several post-baccalaureate fellows and summer students, and taught at two intensive microscopy courses. -

Co-Founder, AdvisorSingula Institute Sep 2017 - May 2020Singula Institute transforms the lives of people suffering from anxiety and depression by individualizing diagnostics and treatments. We deliver precision medicine through an innovative learning health system that leverages clinical research and cutting-edge technology. With an incredible founder team for Singula Institute, we began with the goal of developing a new kind of mental health care centered on the individual that uses an integrated data-driven approach, targeting major depressive disorder. In addition to business plan development and fundraising, I focused on the standardization of Singula's practices and big data integration. -
Course Facilitator, Instructor For Optical Microscopy & Imaging In The Biomedical SciencesMarine Biological Laboratory 2015 - 2019Woods Hole, Ma, UsThis course is designed primarily for research scientists, postdoctoral trainees, core facility directors/staff and graduate students working in the biological sciences. This 9-day course consists of interrelated lectures, laboratory exercises, demonstrations, and discussions that will enable the participants to obtain and interpret high quality microscope data, to understand and assess potential artifacts, to perform quantitative optical measurements, and to generate digital images for documentation and analysis that accurately present the data.I ran the build lab and taught single-molecule fluorescence data processing with ImageJ. -
Phd Candidate In Molecular Physiology & BiophysicsVanderbilt University Medical Center Aug 2009 - Jun 2014Nashville, Tennessee, UsAs a Ph.D. student with Professor David Piston, I worked on several highly collaborative projects in addition to my thesis. During the first two years funded by the Molecular Biophysics Training Grant, I worked with an engineering lab at Rice University to develop a hyperspectral widefield imaging technique for studying simultaneously calcium and cAMP signaling in islet cells. We later combined this technique with a FRET-based apoptosis biosensor to assess stress-induced crosstalk between cAMP and caspase apoptotic signaling, yielding a dual-FRET (four-color) imaging paradigm. I also created a series of androgen receptor FRET-based probes and performed fluorescence imaging and data analysis using MatLab and ImageJ for other collaborating labs. My thesis project focused on determining paracrine mechanisms by which insulin and somatostatin inhibit glucagon secretion from pancreatic α-cells in mouse models and donor human tissue. In addition to my lab work, I chaired the Recruitment Committee for the Molecular Biophysics Training Program and served as a student discussion leader in the Foundations in Chemical and Physical Biology class. My previous technology commercialization expertise led me to the Life Science TN Academic Alliance, where I served as Chair of Education, providing training materials and mentorship for the TechVenture business pitch competition in partnership with the Center for Technology Transfer & Commercialization. -
Ms Thesis Student In Biological SciencesThe University Of Alabama In Huntsville Jan 2008 - May 2009Huntsville, Al, UsWorking in the Laboratory for Structural Biology under Dr. Pamela Twigg, I utilized NMR spectroscopy, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and molecular biology techniques to characterize the polyglutamine (polyQ) binding protein, PQBP-1. For my NSF Graduate Research Scholars Program-funded thesis, I identified a mechanism of self-aggregation for this intrinsically-disordered protein. PQBP-1 pathologically interacts with mutant polyQ proteins including Hungtingtin and Ataxin-1, and its gene mutations are known to cause Renpenning's syndrome - a neurodevelopmental disorder. -
Technology Marketing AnalystPurdue Research Foundation 2004 - 2006West Lafayette, In, UsProduced prior art portfolios for disclosed technologies, market reports, and targeted marketing portfolios for fields including bio-nanotechnology, cancer/therapeutics, medical devices, and diagnostics. Pitched medical devices and pharmaceuticals to investors and potential management team members.
