Amiel Courtin-Wilson is one of the most prolific, innovative and critically acclaimed Australian filmmakers of his generation. Working across feature films, documentaries and video installation, his work has screened at Sundance (Chasing Buddha, 2000) Cannes (Cicada, 2009) Venice (Hail, 2011 & Ruin, 2013) and more recently The Whitney Museum (The Silent Eye, 2016) Amiel has won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and recently won the Byron Kennedy Award at the Australian AACTA Awards for innovation in cinema over the last twenty years. As well as working as a journalist for publications including IF Magazine, The Saturday Paper and The Monthly Magazine and exhibiting his photography and drawings in solo exhibitions at Utopian Slumps (2009) and Gertrude Contemporary Art Space (2015) Amiel's documentary Islands screened at the Museum of Natural History in New York and toured the United States for a year in 2002, he participated in a Yoko Ono retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in 2014 and in 2013 he was asked to contribue to the Venice Film Festival's 70th anniversary celebrations by representing Australia with the short film CARSON. Since then he has collaborated with theatre companies, dance companies and worked in Japan, East Timor, India, Cambodia, South Africa and the United States. Amiel's work has exhibited at museums across Asia, Europe and Australia and he has given guest lectures and workshops at UCLA, Yale, Harvard, Johns Hopkins and in 2016 he won the Digital Portraiture prize at the National Portrait Gallery for his moving image work CHARLES. In 2020 Amiel worked with Musee D'orsay curator Donatien Grau to create a feature length examination of infamous French author Pierre Guyotat's seminal work EDEN EDEN EDEN as part of a fifty city celebration of Guyotat's text. Amiel is passionate about working with emerging filmmakers and he has acted as Executive Producer on Australian feature films STRANGE COLOURS (Venice 2017) and FRIENDS AND STRANGERS (Rotterdam 2021 and voted by Sight and Sound as one of the top films of 2021). Amiel's first retrospective of films screened at the Melbourne Cinematheque in 2018 and Amiel is currently in production on a number of new feature documentary films and he is developing several major new moving image works including the thermal imaging feature film TRACES, a portrait of Charlemagne Palestine called BODY MUSIC, portrait of Cecil Taylor AN AMERICAN TIME TRAVELLER and the sister features CARNATION and UNDERWOOD. amiel@floodprojects.com | floodprojects.com
