Amika conducted and supervised research that is embedded in the Child and Health Care Research group (Amsterdam Public Health Research). She supervised PhD-students and postdoctoral researchers that are working in the field of active lifestyle in and around schools, research on the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement and healthy life style in 0-4 year old children. Fields of workPhysical activity interventions, determinants of physical acitivty, primary schools, secondary schools, health care, prevention of overweight, Intervention Mapping, designing and evaluating interventions.

As a senior research & policy advisor Amika adviced the associate dean of research on issues related to the research policy of the VU University medical center. She evaluated existing and developed new policies with regard to strategic aims, funding, and valorisation. Amika managed and supported relevant committees, developed reports and briefings on a range of topics pertaining to an improved environment for excellent research within VU University medical center.

From 2009-2012 Amika was coordinating the ENERGY-project (www.projectenergy.eu), a European-funded project within the 7th Framework Program.Amika was responsible for (1) setting up organizational structures and decision-making mechanisms of the project; (2) organising and chairing meetings; (3) an adequate monitoring and evaluation; (4) supervising administration, allocation and management of the budget and (5) communication and reporting to the European Commission.

Next to her activites as European project manager, Amika coordinated small and medium-sized projects within the VU University Medical Center.

Amika was working on the longitudinal data of the Amsterdam Growht and Health Study to study biological and life style determinants that predict adult physical activity and inactivity levels.She also had teaching responsibilities concerning courses for students in Medicine and Health Sciences, and individual supervision in research training. She is involved in the Erasmus/Socrates program 'Children and Physical Activity - a European Perspective' as a teacher for the subject ‘Physical Activity Intervention Strategies in children' since 2002.

I was working as a PhD-fellow at the EMGO Institute (VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam). In 2008 I obtained my PhD for my thesis on the evaluation of the effectiveness of a school-based intervention program aiming at the prevention of obesity in adolescents.

As a research coordinator I coordinated the development and implementation of research activities across all institutions collaborating within Sarphati Amsterdam. I was the liaison between researchers, business developers and communication advisor.

My focus was a background study for the Council for Public Health & Health Care on obesity among the Dutch working population.
