Amin Azimi's research interests are primarily focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying neuronal communication and multiregional information transfer during sleep. More specifically, his interests lie in the coordination of slow oscillations, thalamic spindles, and hippocampal ripples and their role in memory consolidation. He has developed neural network models to explain the mechanism underlying the coupling of these rhythms, including developing a minimal hippocampo-cortico-thalamic network to investigate the temporal coupling of SOs, spindles, and ripples simultaneously.In addition to studying sleep-related phenomena, Amin is also interested in investigating the role of endogenous electric fields in modulating neuronal activity via a feedback mechanism known as ephaptic coupling. He analyzed extracellular recordings in freely behaving animals to gain insights into this phenomenon. Furthermore, he was intrigued by the effects of long-duration spindles on memory performance and how they can be induced computationally and he is pursuing this subject to get some exciting results.In summary, Amin aims to use computational approaches to investigate the underlying mechanisms of neural communication and information transfer, particularly during sleep and its effect on memory consolidation.He is currently pursuing studies in modeling abstract decision making in his new postdoc position.
