As a Student Researcher, I lead a comprehensive investigation into drought dynamics within the Cuneo district, Italy, as part of my thesis project. Utilizing advanced hydrological modelling techniques, including rainfall-runoff modelling and machine learning algorithms, I simulated drought occurrences over 60 years.Key responsibilities and achievements:•Developed and calibrated the TUW model, a semi-distributed rainfall-runoff model, to accurately simulate streamflow within multiple catchments in the study area.•Leveraged the Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE) metric for model calibration, ensuring robust representation of low-flow events during drought periods.•Employed the Standardized Runoff Index (SRI) for precise characterization of drought occurrences, providing valuable insights into their spatial and temporal dynamics.•Conducted meticulous validation of model outputs, demonstrating significant agreement between simulated and observed discharge data, especially during critical low-flow periods.•Explored the complex interplay between land characteristics and climate variables to deepen our understanding of drought severity and duration.•Contributed to advancing hydrological modelling techniques and provided critical insights for water resource management strategies and drought mitigation efforts in the region.This research not only enhances our understanding of drought dynamics but also lays the groundwork for future studies on hydrological extremes and climate change impacts.

As part of a six-person interdisciplinary team, I collaborated on a university challenge focused on developing a small satellite solution to prevent wildfires in the Mediterranean region. Our team comprised two environmental engineers, including myself, along with three aerospace engineers, and a management engineering student.My contributions to the project included:Utilizing the R programming language to create and develop a comprehensive 3D model of the forest and canopy height. This model served as a foundational tool for our wildfire prevention strategy.Applying simulation techniques to model wildfires, contributing crucial insights to enhance forest management strategies during emergencies.Successfully developing the 3D model, which played a pivotal role in our team's first-place finish in the university challenge.Throughout the project, I gained valuable insights into teamwork and international collaboration. This experience fostered cross-cultural understanding and facilitated effective group dynamics, contributing to our team's success.This university challenge provided an exceptional opportunity to apply my expertise in environmental engineering and data analysis within a multidisciplinary team setting, ultimately contributing to innovative solutions for wildfire prevention in the Mediterranean region.
